ADDICTION

OLD DEFINITION:  DEPENDENCE ON A SUBSTANCE (DRUG) TO WHICH THE BODY DEVELOPS A TOLERANCE AND SHOWS WITHDRAWAL WHEN DEPRIVED OF IT.

NEW DEFINITION:  ADDS A CONCEPT AND NOW INCLUDES BEHAVIORS THAT PEOPLE TURN TO FOR RELIEF OF DISTRESS AND CONTINUE TO RELY ON DESPITE NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON THEIR EMOTIONAL OR SOCIAL FUNCTIONING.

WE USED TO SAY PHYSICALLY ADDICTED AND EMOTIONALLY DEPENDENT.  NOW ADDICTION IS USED FOR ALL.
